I think they're both crappy relationships.

Question for people more familiar with, well, both shows -- how much did Ares misrepresent himself, relatively?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
In one ep he took the form of an old man and pretended to be her long-lost father so he could manipulate her into becoming a warlord again.

ayrt

Ew. That's not quite what I meant, though. As far as I know -- and I could easily be wrong -- it was always understood that Ares was a war god and wanted Xena to go back to being a warlord. Whereas -- according to my even more questionable knowledge of Hannibal -- at the outset Will is unaware that Hannibal is a serial killer or that Hannibal is trying to maneuver him into being something he doesn't want to be. Are these impressions correct?

It's all because of the new trend that "dictates" that everything in fandom has to be politically correct and there's this need to attack (or at least point constantly that this and that are so wrong) anything that isn't.

If Xena was a new fandom, chances are it would be condemned too.

Well, this is the first thing I've learned about Xena that makes me want to watch it, so thanks for this secret, bb.

(Does she ever break away from him and kick his ass?)

She kicks his ass a lot. He spends most of the series trying (and failing) to win her back. It's awesome.

all the time and it's awesome.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
iirc, she technically broke away from him before the series began, and most of the time when he shows up in the series she ends up kicking his ass.

[You do, however, end up with plenty of back story about their time together as the series goes on.]

It probably doesn't hurt that, by the start of the series, Xena had rejected Ares and soundly kicked his ass every time he tried to interfere with her life. Despite his being a god and her being mortal, there's an odd sort of equality to their interactions. I don't watch Hannibal, but the impression I've gotten from fandom is that it doesn't depict a relationship of equals.

This. She's defeated him multiple times on a mental/strategic level and can hold her own with him on a physical level. Not to mention that there've been several times where he's been completely reliant on her for his survival (the body swap episode, the reality-altering quill/parchment episode, and most of season six come to mind), so yeah. There's definitely a shifting equality that sometimes falls on one end and sometimes the other.

Also a large part of his characterization comes from just who he is: the God of War. Like you can't fault a character for acting out their magical/genetic code.

(Also awesome Callisto icon. I love her so much. <3)
cassandraoftroy: Callisto from Xena, looking annoyed (callisto irritated)

[personal profile] cassandraoftroy 2013-08-17 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly. I was remembering that one time he got turned mortal when I wrote my comment. And you said it really well -- sometimes the power balance tips one way and sometimes it tips the other, but fundamentally she refuses to think of herself as less than his equal.

Thanks! Callisto is my favorite; she's so wonderfully crazy.

Really? You're comparing fandom reactions between a show that's happening right now to one that ended YEARS ago? Of course Xena didn't get as much heat, the internet wasn't the giant fucking fandom-filled extravaganza it is now. I'm sure fans reacted to it then and some react now but the fact that you're expecting the SAME reactions is incredibly unrealistic.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I was around online when xena was showing and it was huge. The fic turnout was comparable to the big fandoms now like merlin. Makes me sad though, most of the fic disappeared when geocities got wiped.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say Hannibal/Will is "condemned" really; most shippers readily admit its abusiveness.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. At least where I've been, most shippers are really aware of what they're shipping and enjoy the fucked up dynamic. It's not really the same as wiping Hannibal's slate clean or woobifying him.

[Picture is Aries and Xena from the TV show "Xena: Warrior Princess" and Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter from the TV show "Hannibal". Aries has olive skin and short kind of wavy dark hair and a lock-style mustache/beard combo. He is wearing a dark coat and holding the shoulders of Xena, being all sort of seducing like while he tells her something from the back. Xena has olive skin and long dark hair, and is leaning back with her eyes closed, listening to Ares. They are somewhere near a stone wall, with a firelight to the distance. Will and Hannibal are standing not that differently, but Will seems more neutral, with his eyes wide open and ignoring Hannibal, while Hannibal leans over to him and looks at the viewer, his mouth closed. Will has light skin, light eyes and short, wavy dark hair, with a slight beard and mustache. Hannibal has light skin and short dark brown hair neatly styled. He is wearing a expensive blue and brown suit and tie.]

The relationships aren't exactly the same, but they're similar enough that I don't really understand why Hannibal and Will's relationship is largely condemned as being problematic and abusive, but Ares and Xena's isn't.

also thank you for telling me, wow this was embarrassing

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I'd say it's because there was less of a power imbalance. Granted, I've seen little of Hannibal, but from what I gather Will has no idea what's happening to him.

On the other hand, Xena was well-aware that Ares was a manipulative ass and turned the tables on him regularly.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Except with Xena and Ares, while Ares was trying to corrupt and change Xena back into her evil ways, she changed him, for the better. The God he was in Path of Vengeance was miles and miles from where he began in The Reckoning, or The Furies, because of loving Xena.

So really, to me, it's closer to the Spuffy relationship on BtVS. Both relationships stretched across several seasons, and included changes to both sets of characters, together and apart, love transforming the evil dude in question.

Hasn't Hannibal been on just one season? Maybe if you waited a few seasons, if the show makes it that long, you might be able to assess them more equally.

For now, there's no comparison.

The God he was in Path of Vengeance

Wasn't he still a bad guy in that ep?

Maybe it's because Ares is a Greek god, and Greek gods are dicks. And by the time we meet him, Xena's already free from his manipulations.

Hannibal is human, and Will is a lot more fragile than Xena (who, in the end lived in a different time than Will and Hannibal).
