It's rare that I like a secret, but this one, yeah. So much truth.

I for one vote that secrets whining about feminist ragging on the Disney Princess Line go the same way as the ships its did.

Yeah, the victim blaming in fandom is sick. :/

I'm with you, OP. Calling her weak or useless is honestly pretty pathetic, considering what she's gone through.

warning for abuse

[Picture is Cinderella from the Disney animated film "Cinderella". She is a young woman with rosy light skin, blue eyes, wavy dark blonde hair reaching past her shoulders and dark pink lips. She is smiling and looking to the side as she says something. She is wearing a light blue dress or blouse with a black vest.]

I am firmly of the belief that anyone who calls Cinderella a weak doormat of a character (or a bad role model because she teaches little girls that dreaming for things will get you anything you want) doesn't understand the dynamics of abusive/controlling families and how dreaming about a better future is often the only thing that keeps you going on the worst days.

Same for a lot of the early disney females that people rag on now because they didn't wield a sword and run off into the woods to save themselves.

Cause the only Prince that did anything proactive in those days was Phillipe. (and he was one of the few with a NAME) The male and female characters were pretty lacking in action in those days.

This.

Hell, Cinderella's prince didn't even take the effort to personally look for her. He was just like all like "Hey, manservant. I just met the girl of my dreams. Take this shoe and start searching for me, KTHXBAI."

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
i don't blame him tbh. that kingdom looked huuuuge. D:

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
Lol he didn't even bother to do that, his father ordered the search.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Weeellllll....in the movie it's said the prince searched all night for her, then the Duke took over. In my head canon he searched till he couldn't even sit on his horse anymore from exhaustion, then his father ordered him home to bed, dragged the Duke out and made the DUKE search while the prince napped

It's kills me because the protagonists of Sleeping Beauty were always meant to be the fairies. It's the most feminist film. Older women, taking care of a young woman, defeating evil, they gave the prince all his means. And everyone overlooks them.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I had no idea people thought that about Cinderella. Yea that's sort of sad anyone would think such a thing. :/ I guess some people can't understand or feel empathy for some things unless they've gone through it themselves, which I hope they never have to.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
You know, that's very enlightening. Because, yeah, I never thought about that nor did I have any clue about those kinds of abusive dynamics, and I didn't like the Disney Cinderella for exactly that reason, and now that you point that out that makes a great deal of sense.

So thanks.

I always wonder if people who harp on Cinderella actually watched the movie. Do they not remember how hard Cinderella worked, only for her step-sisters to physically attack her and keep her from going to the ball? Or how her step-mother *locked* her away to keep her secret?

But, no, they want to ignore this part of the story and talk about how Cinderella "sat around and waited to be saved". *insert eyeroll here*

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well, she wasn't exactly stealing the stepfamily's jewels and striking out in the world to build a new life elsewhere. (Not that that would be that historically accurate, I guess, and I can see that seeming like a worse option to putting up with the abuse.) I mean, she had to endure a lot, and she wasn't weak for doing so, but endurance is not the same as actively trying to escape a situation.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I used to think like the people you describe, and now I am so ashamed of myself for it. She was actually a very strong character, considering the things she regularly put up with.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still a bit pouty about the fact that the step sisters didn't get the original fairytale's treatment when trying on the shoe. But that might have been a bit bloody for Disney.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish more people would realize this. I deliberately took a contrary/defensive position when I was doing a feminist analysis of the Disney Princesses, and basically pointed out that you're a shitty feminist if you're looking down on a victim/survivor of abuse for not...I dunno, being more aggressive or something. I especially loathe the ones that think Cinderella is a flat character. Aurora is for sure, but Cinderella has a great sarcastic sense of humour, holds on to hope in a horrible living situation, and looks for joy where she can find it.
