Wat. Do you read books much?

ETA: Just a sample of the genre books I've read lately... J by William Sanders and Silk by Caitlin Kiernan are about lesbians, one of the main pairings in Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds is a straight relationship in which the woman is trans. This is all just random stuff I've read since the beginning of this year. Right now I'm reading a novel ms for a friend in which two of the male main characters are FWBs. So I'm not sure why this is such a concern to you that it's distracting you from finishing your books.

Yeah but Khouri and Volyova never got together

STILL KINDA MAD ABOUT THAT (and also the totally-shoehorned-in romance plot with Khouri and Thorn)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh uh

I just realized you probably haven't read Redemption Space yet if you're just reading Chasm City

Whoops, sorry about that (no major spoilers, I guess)
thene: and the space is filled with stars (centuries)

OH FUCKING THIS, SERIOUSLY. HE WROTE ALL THIS BEAUTIFUL, KINKY, HELLA EROTIC LESBIAN ROMANCE AND THEN WASTED IT BY NOT HAVING THEM ACTUALLY HOOK UP EVEN THOUGH KHOURI KNEW VOLYOVA HATED THORN FOR TRYING TO BREAK UP HER OTP, WHICH IS KHOURI/VOLYOVA. for the love of god you've got the obedience drugs and the constant 'good girl's and I almost wallbanged when they were in that filthy bar in Redemption Arc and inexplicably not making out. Fuck Thorn so hard. Oh god, and the canon fempreg. Reynolds writes the least convincing straight women of all time. I honestly want to know if he realises he's doing it. (I prompted it on the big femslash meme last year but no one bit :/ )

I AM SO GLAD THAT YOU FEEL THE SAME AS ME ABOUT THIS YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOLY CRAP you could have taken the words out of my mouth.

GOD, that was frustrating. Like, they as individual characters and their relationship were by FAR the most interesting thing in the series imo, and he just seems to be totally fucking committed to never carrying it through and then actually breaking it up as much as he can. It doesn't make any sense.

it's really great to see that i'm not alone in thinking this. it's a shame that no one bit on the meme, khouri/volyova space pirate fic is something that should absolutely exist.
thene: Fang, Vanille and the space between them. (awakened)

yeah as is Mademoiselle/Khouri voyeuristic domination, Mademoiselle/Skade mindfuck masturbation and Skade/Khouri noncon. I'm just saying. ;___; God I love all these huge lesbians. Yeah, I am esp pissy for Ilia. I was never into her being hung up on the Captain (particularly not after figuring out what he'd done), and then when he was more of a character in Absolution Gap he was...not that interesting to me. :/ But between him and Khouri's husband, they're both theoretically tied to totally absent men and it is all of the closeted lesbians. AAAAGHH.

Also thanks, I have just been leafing through Redemption Arc for the first time since I read Chasm City and finally get who H is. /dumb

eta: you know, there is no fandom for this whatsoever and so much to make fanworks about but all I want is really filthy lesbian porn. i'm not even that guilty, lol

It could simply be that the OP isn't American. None of those books you listed have been published in my country, for example.

I'm not American either, and nor are two of the abovementioned writers (including my friend who wrote the ms). Not everywhere outside America is a homophobic wasteland.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-08-17 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Uhm, I didn't say it was...? I simply meant that if OP isn't American, chances are that's it's indeed gonna be harder to get a book like that published. And out of those two writers you say aren't American, one of them actually lives (and was published) in the USA. The other is British and also writes in English, which is my point -- if that's not the OP's native language, s/he's probably not gonna want to write it in English or try to get the original publication to be over there.

But let's face it, OP is on an English-language fandom site typing in English about the potential reactions of people in fandom, a culture whose dominant language is English. That OP is writing in English is not a very radical assumption. I could be wrong, sure. But many other large literary cultures have lots of space for gay romance - I'm only listing English books because I only read in English and am subject to the attendant selection bias. My bff reads gay romances in Chinese.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-08-17 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I just re-read the secret, and I think I just got it wrong the first time. I thought it was more about OP saying s/he'd never get published -- as opposed to not getting a fandom. So yeah, I fold!

or maybe you're just a dickhole.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
is it 'asshole response to perfectly reasonable statement' day or something?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
seriously, man.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I love Alastair Reynolds' stuff. Just read Century Rain. Both were wonderful, most of the way through Chasm City. Both womderful.

Correction: Just read Century Rain, most of way through CC. Both wonderful. Am typing drunk.
thene: Nono, the moogle mechanic from FFXII (moogle love)

[personal profile] thene 2013-08-17 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
ooh, not read Century Rain yet! I think I have a copy - I picked up a ton of his stuff in the Borders clearance and have been reading through it slowly ever since. I shall look forward to that one.

AYRT: It's wonderful - futuristic sci-fi and Parisian noir crossed over. It shouldn't work but it somehow does. And I find the characters endearing in a way that I haven't really in Chasm City.
thene: PROTIP do not fuck with Minette (minette)

[personal profile] thene 2013-08-17 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Mm, I love all of the Reynolds stuff I've read but Chasm City didn't get to me as much as the Revelation Space series. Chasm City seemed way slower to get to the point than it needed to be. And I kept going 'where are all the women' because everything else I've read by him is full of awesome women. Zebra and Constanza needed more pagetime :( Though I guess I can excuse the three main characters all being men because spoiler. :)
