I thought that Snape only joined the Death Eaters because they gave him a place to belong, accepted him, etc. He'd been bullied and abused all his life and that was why he joined, not because he really believed Muggles were inferior.

tbh I kind of feel that's probably why a lot of them of them joined up... maybe not so much being bullied and abused, but wanting to feel important. Even the people who had bigoted views weren't necessarily initially for killing anyone. Initially.

That's the impression I got of Snape (and maybe Draco and Narcissa, too, and possibly Regulus?). They joined the Death Eaters because they liked feeling important and special, then hated it when reality went from rose-tinted to blood-tainted, but by then it was too late and they were in too deep so they just had to keep moving forward to try and get out of it, or at least undo their damage.

That's not Snape, though. He knew what he was getting into. By his fifth year, Voldemort was already known as "you-know-who", so everyone knew what Voldemort was getting up to and how horrific it was. Snape knew what being a Death Eater involved. And by the age of fifteen he was willing and capable of performing violent dark magic on others like sectumsempra.

Snape wasn't Draco. Snape only ever defected because he thought it meant Lily would be safe under Dumbledore's protection. Had he believed Voldemort would keep his word and protect Lily fully, he would've stayed a loyal Death Eater in Voldemort's inner circle.

This is how I read it too.

Well, Death Eaters are sort of a Nazi allegory, and in that respect it's probably pretty literal. Some people became Nazis because their families wanted them to, or because they thought it would protect them, but others did because they were still reeling from the effects of World War I and saw an up-and-coming political movement that promised them power. The fact that most or all of them were at least a little bit anti-Semitic (as was the style at the time) just meant they were able to justify it to themselves a little more easily. Presumably all the Death Eaters had at least a little anti-Muggle sentiment in them, but to many it was probably less about Muggles and more about power. And Snape definitely could have been one of those.

And even many of the good guys in HP, regardless of their lack of concern for blood purity, still treat Muggles as an inferior class of person. The prejudices are pretty pervasive.

I've always been disturbed by the blithe way the Wizarding authorities would use memory modification on Muggles, as one example of the way that society treats the non-magical as less-than.

even characters that love Muggles (like Arthur Weasley) do it in a way that is hella condescending like 'oh how cute they think they're people~' kind of way.

It's true, and really kind of awkward and unpleasant. It's a subtler prejudice, fueled by ignorance rather than violent hatred, but prejudice nonetheless. (Hello, allegory.)

But Snape looked down on Muggles before he ever went to school. He had lots of reasons to dislike Petunia, because she was mean to him, but he looked down on her because she was a Muggle. It would've been justified if he'd been like "she sucks because she's a nasty person" but nope, it was "she suck because she's a Muggle".

He could've found acceptance and friendship with any number of Slytherins who weren't proto-Death Eaters. The majority of his house and his year, even, were not involved in the dark arts/death eater stuff, as far as we know in canon. He chose to side with the bigots.

to me, snape's hatred of muggles (like voldemort's, initially, before him) came from a combination of self-loathing and transference. his father abused his mother and him, and the implication to me is that part of the father's 'justification' of his actions was that they were magical. he considers himself to be the half-blood prince, but we don't really know which way he's meaning that - clinging to his 'wizard half' or trying to wear the part of him he hates like armor. both are equally sad.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely agree. That still doesn't excuse his hatred of a whole group of people, though. Every bigot has a "reason".
