A writer whose smut I've been enjoying the hell out of posted a selfie on Tumblr, which is how I discovered she's somebody I met one time IRL in a completely non fandom capacity. My brain is now confused. I had totally toyed with the idea of asking her out and regretted not meeting her again when in fact I was in a deep and meaningful relationship with her fic.

What are your best stories of breaking the fandom wall, FS?

If you only met her once irl, how in the world did you recognize her? Does she have some really distinctive feature?

I remember the faces of people that I've only met once before.

Some people have good memories when it comes to that, and some people don't. It's really not that weird, either way.

Is it that weird? We hung out for an afternoon, and I found her attractive. I think a lot of people would remember someone in that context? Then in retrospect other things fell into place.

Eh, I can remember people I've met only once before, sometimes even years later.

Specifically, I ran into my college orientation group leader on a shuttle two years after our one and only session together and was able to put a first-letter-of-her-name and place to her face. (She didn't remember me at all.) And then a woman who guest conducted our choir for a conference (saw her for half an hour tops) ended up coming to teach at our school a year later, and - after a few perplexing minutes - I was able to place her as well.

So yeah. Definitely possible.

well just freaking yesterday someone I haven't talked to in like 5 years messaged me on facebook and said "I just figured out who you are in Vikings fandom!!" and I was like BWUH so that's awkward.

I wore my homestuck shirt to my family reunion.

And these shy cousins around my age approached me.

It was so nice to have someone my own age to talk to for once.

No lie, most of my life is due to me deciding to meet fandom people IRL. First time was a coincidence - I was sat reading a pile of printed-off slashfics from ffn in the sixth-form library and got asked what I was reading by a guy I vaguely knew who I'd heard talking about writing seriousface genfics about turn-based strat games. I told him I was reading slash because I figured he'd know what the word meant and it would make him go away. He did, and came back a couple of days later with some printoffs of his own slash fics.

Right now I share an apartment with a guy I met on a videogame BBS ten years ago and a woman I first saw around in a capslock comm four years ago and then met in person at a con because she wanted to hang out with an internet friend of mine who was staying in my spare room for the con. The reason I moved to this town is because of another friend I met on the internet, and also his IRL girlfriend who he internet-introduced me to. I met two out of my last three relationship partners in fandom. Pretty much nothing good would ever have happened to me if I had any respect for the irl/fandom wall.

Don't know if this is what you mean, but. I have a FMA messenger bag. My roommate is a high school teacher and when some of her students were helping us move, they saw it, learned it belonged to me and wanted to talk about anime the rest of the day. It was weird in that they were her students who I'd never met before, but other than that it was cool.
