Basically, I love him. But he's entirely ruthless and not the quintessential good guy that people want him to be.

It took me a while, admittedly, I remember in OoTP really not liking that - but I actually kind of love Dumbledore's character because he's so damn complex. And in a lot of ways he demonstrates just how far a Gryffindor can go the same way Voldemort demonstrates just how far a Slytherin can go. Gryffindors are knights, and if you look back at history, knights did some pretty shitty things because they decided it was for the greater good.

I always thought they should've sorted according to weaknesses, not strength.

You're brave? Good, but you're rash and need to learn how to think before you act. Ravenclaw. You're ambitious and somewhat ruthless? Hufflepuff, to learn about the value of kindness. You're smart but don't know how to make yourself heard? Gryffindor. And so on.

I don't think that would work - if everyone that is ambitious and somewhat ruthless ends up in Hufflepuff, the Hufflepuff will end up as the ambitious and ruthless house. It would only work if you did it with a very few students.

Doesn't have to be that way. Ambition doesn't necessarily mean you lack compassion, you could just as well be somewhat of a coward who'd benefit from Gryffindor. I mean, it's not like the houses have a direct opposite; weaknesses may vary.

But you'd still end up with a pack of unkind kids together and a pack of rash, reckless kids, and so on (whichever weaknesses are being sorted). There's no inherent moderating force that comes from being in a house that shapes behavior. Maybe if they did, like, an exchange student thing in the second year: e.g. half the Slytherins swap out with half the Hufflepuffs or however works out best.

I only started to really like Dumbledore as a character when I started to notice the really shady and somewhat messed-up things he was doing. Purely good characters bore me.
