Nah, dude. An anon's unnecessarily dickish response to a legit question isn't going to suck the fun out of anything for me.

But, come on, when you say you lost interest in something because lots of other people were enjoying it (or not enjoying it as was the case occasionally), then what should one assume? I'm going to assume, based on the response you gave, that as one's perceived popularity of a thing increases, one's interest in experiencing that thing decreases. Otherwise, why lose interest just because the thing you are interested in interests others? If that's not the case, then cool. But, if so, then why be a dick about it?

To be honest I felt like your question was a little dickish. And maybe that's not what you meant but it really felt like a bait attempt and this is a stupid argument. We are both getting hyper-defensive about nothing and that's stupid.

Heh. ~Misunderstaaaandings... the Internet couldn't function without them, I think.

I wasn't really feeling defensive, just curious, but I apologize if I came off like a jerkass. That wasn't my intention at all, nor was I trying to bait you into some wank. I'm sorry.

DA:

I cannot answer for the OP, but since you seem really interested? Yes, it does happen to me as well.

When something is really over-hyped and the whole world seems to go crazy for it, I can lose interest before the fact and it can take me years (if ever) before I actually see it.

Or it can simply decrease my interest tremendously, even if I see it. The last example was The Dark Knight: I couldn't even see it when it came out because every theater seat seemed to be booked weeks in advance?! By the time I finally saw it months later, my urge to see it had dropped considerably and I was impressed, sure, but I couldn't understand what all the excitement had been about.

There is such a thing as over-hyping: it certainly means that our expectations have no chance of being met and that we will end up being disappointed.

Also, in my case at least, it is partly elitism, because I have noticed that all my favorite movies/books/shows are rarely all that popular, being instead more the cult classics if not downright obscure, while hugely popular things (eg: Harry Potter, Twilight, Teen Wolf etc.) are never my cup of tea.
