Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner series features a gay couple as the protagonists, and it's reasonably popular. As was Lackey's The Last Herald Mage. It's not outside of the realm of possibility. Especially for a fantasy series, a genre that tends to be female dominated. You might even lure some slash fans in because of it (Flewelling certainly seems to have).

It's worth thinking about just how old the LHM is; the first part came out in the late 1980s, I think. Boys were kissing boys in the Vampire Chronicles and in Darkover years before that, though the LHM is afaik the first time gay identity was ever made central in fantasy/sf/horror. It also still has an active fic fandom, unlike almost all other books.

This secret is literally over twenty years out of date. Kind of impressive.
