I think worrying about the fandom is part of worrying about publishers rejecting it. Publishers want a book that will sell well, and most books aren't advertised that much, so sales rely on word of mouth. I know that if I put in elements that Whovians cream themselves over, it'll eventually reach the Sherlockians and Supernaturalists, and boom, that a fandom that will buy your book and recommend it to others who will also buy your book. I know it's bad to think about the money in writing rather than the art of writing, but art isn't going to put food on the table. (The money won't either, unless you get a pretty devoted and active fandom.)

Teal deer says, "Worrying about the fandom isn't so much worrying about the fandom as it is worrying about sales and advertisement."

There's nothing wrong with writing for money, but unless you're self-publishing, the writing comes before the marketing. Write the book, pitch it, then rewrite, adding in fanservicey elements as needed. Two years from now, when the book is finally on the shelves, the fandoms could be completely different.

If nothing else, a finished work can be used to apply for a ghostwriting job for a book packager.
