Not OP, but I feel the same way. I saw the huge hype on tumblr and thought "okay, might be worth it" and then saw the discussion on here where everyone was basically saying "it's a dumb action film, what else were you expecting?" as if the hype wasn't setting it up as more than that. I thought it was going to be something truly original and groundbreaking... sort of like what the Matrix was like. But the reactions on f!s made it seem more like Transformers with a progressive female lead.

But that's basically true. There isn't much orinigality in Pacific Rim - there isn't supposed to be. It's a cool action movie full with genre quotes from someone who really knows the genre. It's less stupid than a lot of other action movies, but it's still not very clever. It's a pretty, fun movie for fans of that very particular genre. The way The Avengers was a fun movie for comic genre fans.

Haven't seen Transformers, but that's what it is. It's a pretty action movie with a progressive female lead. It's also a lot of fun so a lot of people are exicted - but if you think it's something you may not like it probably is better to wait for DVD?

It's not a "dumb action film" so much as it is a simple action film. It's exactly what it says on the tin.

It's also uncynical and devoid of gritty manpain, which these days, in an action movie, is pretty freaking original.

It also creates characters who look and act like they have lives beyond what we see on screen, creating a certain depth to the world they inhabit. They fill the archetypes often, yes, but not in a lazy way.

It also features an Action Male Lead (who isn't really the protagonist--he's the mentor) who's defining characteristic are his empathy and his calm, respectful demeanor. Which again, kind of rare.

The Mary Sue has a pretty good article on what makes it unique. And over here is another good post about the movie's fairly surprising treatment of it's "geeks."

The story? Yeah, it's monsters smashing robots. The story isn't original. The execution is.
