Well, if Snape was going to end up killing people anyway (which it sounds like he was, considering it was a war and all), I'd rather he do it to help out Dumbledore than to help out Voldemort, and I imagine many inside the Harry Potter world would, too, if those are the only options.

Also, I'm not saying people went into it not knowing what was going to happen - I just mean sometimes, knowing something intellectually and being their or doing it first hand can be two very, very different things. From the looks of it, Snape quite liked Lily and was at least on friendly terms with her before the blow-up in the Penseive memory, and combined with his own blood status, I doubt he joined Voldemort because he truly believed in Pureblood superiority. Most likely, he was attracted to the idea of power (after all, everyone is afraid of Death Eaters, something that would appeal to a long-standing bullying victim), and it wasn't until later that the cost of being a Death Eater truly hit him.

And honestly, from the sounds of it, a LOT of Death Eaters 'got off easy' from the previous war, not just Snape - I can't remember where in the books it was mentioned, but I think there was something about them using Voldemort's nasty reputation to claim they were forced into being a Death Eater (i.e. torture, Imperius, etc), and in many cases it worked.

I think Snape did believe in pureblood superiority, though. He certainly thought muggles were inferior, and the people he latched onto at school were all purebloods, by no coincidence. He boasted (at least to himself) the fact that he was at least half-blood, to distance himself from his muggle father and cling to his witch mother's ancestry. At least, it showed he did care about his blood status. He did think it mattered.

I do agree that he wished for power. I think his parents were really neglectful and I think that drove that desire. I just don't think he was ever phased by what being a Death Eater entailed. If he'd been disgusted with it, he wouldn't have worked his way up into Voldemort's inner circle, he wouldn't have become one of Voldemort's most trusted servants by the age of 20. That shows some ambition and dedication on his part. He was infamous of Sectumsempra in the first war, according to Remus, which is a curse that can torture and kill without immediate medical attention, and I highly doubt Snape went to patch up the people he attacked on the battle field. It just doesn't sound at all like he was a Draco type; gungho about the idea, but not able to live with it in practice. He seemed more like a Lucius Malfoy, who was totally with it until it meant personal ramifications to the things he cared about, in this case Lily.
