that, to me, is the thing that defines snape's character. we know he was traumatized by the werewolf when he was a child. we know he hates children (particularly THOSE children). but when the wolf corners them, he throws himself in front of them and shields them, because they're children. it's not calculated or planned - he just reacts and his reaction is to save the people he can't stand. I feel like that's over looked a lot in assessments of his character and ugh I sound like a snapewife or something orz

I assume it's overlooked because it's movie, not book, canon? I don't include any movie canon when analyzing characters. So Snape doesn't get any brownie points for throwing himself in between the trio and a werewolf (although I don't necessarily find it improbable) any more than he gets anti-brownie points for showing up at Lily's house and cradling her corpse while ignoring her alive kid (although again I don't necessarily find it improbable).
