Dumbledore decided the way he did things was the correct way and that there was no way to protect Harry or inform him in a way that would allow the same results. He made sort of god-mode decisions hoping they'd pay off, which doesn't show a substancial amount of growth. I like the guy and probably like him more than Snape, but I think the OP has a point.

Plus Snape, while a weasel and NEVER excusing the way he behaved as a teacher, did a lot of good too and was shown time and time again to be protecting Harry. Even though his motivations were also murky.

He played the part of Chess master and sacrificed some people in the name of greater good. But he didn't enjoy doing it and it clearly ate him up to have to hurt some people to save the rest of the world. That shows that while he knew that his job required a certain level of manipulation and harm to a few, it still provided the best outcome and he suffered that burden for the rest of the world.
