1. That's weird, because MGS is such a small fandom, and it's honestly hard to think of anybody who actually has "power" over anybody else like that. Maybe some people just like your stuff?

Well shit, I had this big long response written out and my computer SHUT ITSELF DOWN. Since you're being very nice, I will respond in kind <3 For what it's worth, I'm not even majoring in psychology, but I had some abnormal psych classes so =\

Basically, my point was this: In appropriating a self-mutilating personality onto Hal, you are forcing him into a psychological profile that requires a completely different interpretation of him as a character.

Cutting, or rather general self-mutilation, is an attention-seeking behavior (though it is also sometimes motivated by anger) and is ultimately a symptom of Borderline Personality Disorder, a terrifying disease. Two of my psych professors wouldn't even see BPDs in their practices. Having studied, met, observed, and in one instance been victimized by BPDs, I can understand why. Its primary facets, not to put too fine a point on it, involve incredibly heavy degrees of lying and severe emotional manipulation of others to avoid abandonment (real or not).

One shouldn't include personal shit in arguments, I know, but just so it's more than clear... Like I said, I was victimized at one point, and I've personally known at least two other victims of it. BPDs seek out targets for which to attach fully. These targets are usually very emotionally empathetic and tend to put others' priorities ahead of their own naturally, so attached to an emotional leech it comes out tenfold.

The girl that did it to me was incredibly smart. She started out as simple friends, and we grew closer. When she was confident I was close enough to sacrifice my own well-being for her, she began systematically lying to me about horrible things that had "happened" to her, and generally preying on my emotional willingness to help to satiate her own feelings of worthlessness and abandonment. I became separated from my own family and friends, who recognized what was going on, because I was so entrenched in her lies and desperate to help someone who felt so severely horrible about herself.

Essentially, she would threaten harm and suicide, string me along and scare me to death by purposefully cutting off contact when she deemed I was "leaving" her, go out of her way to lie to me, and constantly express feelings of worthlessness and fractured identity.

To my knowledge, she's had at least three other victims and exhibits this personality in smaller doses to everyone she encounters.

You can see how I feel that for Otacon it's a bit of a stretch.

It's because we all know each other that it's so hard for me to deal with. If it was just the faceless masses of a big fandom, I'd probably like it. It's the fact that people I've known for ages suddenly stop talking to me sensibly and start fussing meaninglessly over everything I say to them and the stupid obsequious comments they say to me. That's why I can't stand this.

Man, you must hang out in some weird corner of the fandom, which is already a weird little corner fandom, cause I can't even think of anybody who really qualifies as a BNF, let alone has sycophants. Are you on the het side or something? (Is there a het side?)

That aside, maybe they just...enjoy what you do, and want to compliment you on it? And have no idea you don't like it? And if you told them to quit it, they would? Just tossing out ideas here.
