Exactly! And honestly, it seemed like most people only started liking Ford after they knew he was going to be leaving. Truth was, his character wasn't really working out, they already had the four core characters, and he didn't bring any extras skills or new aspects to the show like some of the other lesser characters (Zelenka, Kavanagh, etc). Some people seem to fail to realise that often it's the actors that want to move on before they get horribly typecast (Amanda Tapping being a case in point, really). Shanks left of his own accord to go get famous, and even though that didn't work out for him so much, it was still his decision.

Also, Sam has the potential to be a much more involved character than Weir, since she couldn't off-world and also wasn't a scientist so really only got to sit behind her desk and talk about what everyone else was doing. ;P

Sorry for the rant, but it feels good to discuss SG again without the whole 'hate TPTB' thing coming up!

(I really want to know who you are now!)
