Guess I need to keep up better. I thought people were calling for a boycott of Mortal Instruments because Cassandra Clare is a thieving hack and 90 percent of the dialogue we've seen is just bad.

?

I've missed what this drama is about. Give us the goss please.

Cassandra Clare used to write Harry Potter fanfiction - The Draco Trilogy. It was later found that many plot points and pieces of dialogue - things she was praised for by reviewers - were taken from existing works of fiction (everything from Blackadder to obscure fantasy novels) without citations and sources. Plagiarism, basically. As far as I know, her original work doesn't have the same problem, but the fanfic debacle turned many against her. (I missed this myself; only found out about it years later on Fandom Wank.)

To add to what above anon said - She has also taken a lot of money from fans, some say on false pretenses. And she has tried several ways to silence any people that have brought up the plagiarism over the years.

There was some other drama with her involved but can't recall the details atm. Basically, she's not a nice person and people don't like it when not nice people are successful.

Plaigarism!anon from above: Ah, yes, I remember there was something with her asking for money for a laptop/the laptop itself? Or the fans just gave it to her? Either way, it incensed a few people, IIRC.

Silencing? Hadn't heard so much about that. In what ways has she attempted it?

AYRT

I can't recall the details but it was something about taking legal action against people and attempting to wipe the internet of her old fic and discussions of it. I don't think it went anywhere but I never really looked into it. To be fair, that could've just been rumors.

Blimey. That seems a bit much for some badfic. Thanks for the info.

Speaking as someone who was around at the time and who had the misfortune of knowing her: yeah, she pretty much was a horrible and vile person. She lied constantly, would use her fans to do her dirty work (i.e. troll the hell out of other people), and then would in turn talk trash about them.

At the time, since she was so popular, anyone who said anything against her was put through hell and then, when people pointed out her plagiarism, she tried to play it off like she was paying "homage" to the original works. Her becoming a published author just proves to me it's not what you know but who you know.

If you've got a couple of free evenings to kill and would like to read the history of an epic fandom wank, BadPenny has the goods on everything that went down from the perspective of some HP BNF insiders. Here's the link to part one.

Annnd I know what I'm doing with my afternoon.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I walked into the cafe with a jaunty spring in my step. The pumpkin spice latte had arrived at last! It had taken many long, unbearable days for me to finally admit that summer was at an end, but now I had fully embraced fall, and I was looking forward to hot caffeinated autumnal goodness.

I began to make my way through the dining area to the counter, but something stopped me. A flash, a shadow, a hideous shape glimpsed only briefly. My skin tingled. Acid fear flushed through my veins. I stumbled backward, accidentally knocking a cane out of an old woman's hand. "Oh!" she exclaimed. She flailed and swayed before tumbling onto her side and then rolling over onto her back. She rocked back and forth, like a gigantic alabaster turtle.

"MY HIP! JESUS MARY AND JOSEPH, I'VE BROKEN MY HIP!"

I wanted to help her, but it was all I could do not to run screaming from the building. In the corner, there sat a repulsive figure, covered in grease and cotton entrails, face encased in a grotesque plastic cage. Its movements were jerky and unnatural. They seemed to blur, as if the creature's locomotion were out of sync with the rest of reality. I whimpered and its head shot up at the sound. Its eyes locked onto mine -- cold, dead eyes, black as night. I knew, in that instant, that I was done for.

Such was the night I met Cassandra Clare.

And I thought Mortal Instruments was just a rehash of one of her old Harry/Draco/Ginny fics too.

Mortal Instruments spoilers (if you haven't read the books)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I read somewhere thatMortal Instruments was a rehash of a Ron/Ginny incest fic. Never read Mortal Instruments but the gist of what I hear is that the two main characters believe for a good while they're brother and sister and still declare everlasting LURVE, so it sounds right.

I don't really care about what CC did more then 10 years ago when she was writing fanfic, tbh.

And the dialogue wasn't any worse then many other bestsellers, in my opinoin.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about the dialogue from the books, but the dialogue we've heard so far from the movie has mostly been shit delivered by shittier actors.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
But this is fanfic that she wrote more than 10 years ago. She just changed the names and the setting so she could sell it as an original work.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

As long as CC isn't including plagiarized lines in her profic (and I'm certain that if she were, it would have been discovered already by anti-CC fen and widely publicized), then the AYRT's reasons for discounting the importance of what CC did while writing fanfic are valid.
