heroes of cosplay

[personal profile] deadtree 2013-08-17 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got around to watching this show and I thought it was pretty entertaining, though I definitely felt slapped in the face with the constant male-gaze thing it had going on. But overall I thought it was pretty cool. I used to be a VERY casual cosplayer but had friends who were pretty serious and intense about it, and I used to go to a lot of cons. That's about my level of knowledge on the subject right there.

I say all that because I just went strolling on tumblr to find out what people were saying about it and apparently they are flipping their shit because the whole show is sketchy... huh.

What do you guys think? Anyone watching?

I saw some of one episode. It seemed entertaining. Like most "reality" shows, I really wonder how much of the drama is real and how much is for the cameras.

apparently (from what I've read) a lot of it is scripted/staged/pieced together from footage of other cons. I'm not sure how much, mind you, but some of it definitely is. That doesn't really bother me, honestly, unless I can tell (and sometimes it's painfully obvious)

Sketchy how? I haven't watched it yet but I've been meaning to. Jessica Merizan and Holly Conrad are both in it and I follow them both on Twitter, so I keep seeing them talk about it haha.

I don't know much about cosplay at all. It seems fun but a lot of my friends do it and when they talk about it it seems like a lot of work. D:

most of it just seems like typical reality show type stuff, adding drama for the sake of the show-- like a costume that wasn't finished and the girl was freaking out over had actually been finished for months; and cosplayers who were shown to not know each other outside of the competitive arena are actually friends, etc. There was a lot of drama apparently because the show used some professional photos of cosplayers without the photographer's consent on facebook, and even removed the watermarks (which I TOTALLY understand, that is nonsense).
But then a lot of the dislike of the show (that I've seen so far) seems to stem from people's dislike of Yaya Han, who like all celebrities (especially of the internet variety) has a huge base of haters. I've met her before and found her to be sweet, but honestly even if she IS a huge bitch that doesn't necessarily make the show bad.
Also a lot of these negative comments I read about the show bring up Yaya's breast augmentation, which makes their argument void.

Anyway a lot of serious cosplayers are saying it just casts a really negative light on the hobby, but I didn't really get that feeling.

Well, it doesn't make cosplayers look particularly mature, I'll give them that. It's a reality show. I think they want as many of their participants as possible to come off as completely immature.

I felt nothing but secondhand embarrassment, the Yaya Han asskissing did nothing to help. Also that stupid announcement when Yaya was walking down the stairs so she could show off her cosplay... wtf was that? No con does that. And who enters a cosplay contest with characters you made up, even if they are for DnD?

And I think people bring up Yaya's boob job because she supposedly uses them for attention (she's done quite a few cosplays that show them off) but then complains about it on her Facebook page.

I think it would have been a better show if it were more like Big Brother (since they really want the drama) or Face Off.

tbh I originally thought it was going to be more like Face Off/Project Runway, and I wish it had been-- or even without a recurring cast, like Iron Cosplay or something. That probably would have been more entertaining, because none of the people on the show have particularly likable personalities based on what we saw in the first ep (I was just on their site and realized that it will be this same group of cosplayers the entire show, which is probably not a great idea)

hoo boy, all of the threads about the show that keep popping up on 4chan hurts.

imo it's really imo it's really bland. A lot of it is so obviously and painfully scripted and they don't focus on what are the best parts of cosplay and cosplay drama

I actually really enjoyed what I saw of it, but you know, I really love Yaya Han's work and I don't know anything about the behind the scenes stuff so. I'm pretty ignorant about it, really. XD But it definitely made me wish I could go to a con sometime soon. ;3;

My cosplayer friends who watched it were pretty unimpressed with it. For one thing, the promotional article for the show was basically "Check out these weirdos and their weird hobby! They want to turn into fictional people! LOL, freaks!" And then the actual show focuses only on the competitive and commercial parts of cosplay, instead of showing how most people do it as a hobby. So they really didn't like it.

I didn't see it myself, so this is all basically hearsay, but I gotta say that I won't be looking it up after hearing what they thought of it.
