As a distant relative of a semi-known historical figure, it's just kinda cool to see the connection and say, "Hey, I'm related to the guy!" We're as much fans of the subject as the people writing about them, since we've never known them, either.

History is all stories, gathered by people who have never known their subjects. They're more or less based in reality. The only difference with you is you're making up entirely new tales! (Which may or may not be based in reality...)
