Re: Slash: Why do we still need the category?

For the same reason we have categories for everything in fandom: to make things more organized and make it easier to find things that match your interests. It is not like we only tag slash. We tag het, slash, femslash, gen, and a whole boatload of content stuff not related to the genders of the people involved. Tagging a story as slash is no different from tagging it as a comedy or a work in progress or a R-rated fic. They are not value judgements. They are just elements.

And questions about whether a certain someone likes slash can still be very valuable. Even if you don't ship them, your answer will be very different from someone who actually has a moral problem with it. Compare 'I'm not personally into it' with 'ugh, i hate slash'. One sends up personal warning bells, and one does not. Sure you can't 100% filter out assholes, but it'll still filter out the vast majority of them.
