Honestly, what you're asking is closer to "Why are Gay/Lesbian romance labeled that instead of normal romance?' Than it is to 'This is how people react to non-straight couples in real life?' Some people want to read about two people of the same sex together - I know I prefer reading about two people of my orientation if I'm going to read romance novels - and labeling it as such makes it much easier to find.

Plus, it's a polite way to see if people are okay with me talking about some of my pairings around them.
