I went througha brief period of shipping canon when I got involved in the Torchwood fandom.

Never again. Never the fuck again.

I personally think there is a huge freedom in shipping non-canon, in that one does not get so hung up on how canon shows the two characters and one does not get butthurt when canon fails to write the pairing right (with that "right" being very very subjective).

Of course the same outlook is also exactly where I get my huge lack of faith in how well canon sources write pairings (along with a few canons where canon pairings have been handled badly IMO).
