Given the collective fandom sigh of relief when Capaldi was cast and the plethora of posts, in both traditional fan circles and the letters pages of even broadsheet newspaper like the Telegraph and even Guardian, which all ran along the lines of "well I'd have had no objection in principle, but I'm so glad they went with Capaldi" he may have been right. He was just noting the social trend of the casual viewership outside of social justice fandom circles. I agree, there is no reason in principle that the Doctor can't be female or black, its a great bit of fan-cruft and a great fanfic exercise, fucked if I'm going to watch that shite though on Saturday night. I'm glad they went with the normal style of actor.

Um.... judging by what I've seen in fandom and casual viewer spaces? I think he's right. That comment is more a reflection on society than on his own feminist/nonfeminist views.
