And he's said some racist things in the past like

"The great thing about having an English cemetery is I could go back a very, very, very long way. And in America, you go back 250 years (in a cemetery), and then suddenly you’ve got a few dead Indians, and then you don’t have anybody at all, unless you decide to set it up in Maine or somewhere and sneak in some Vikings.”

Unless you mean using the word Indians instead of Native American?

That is more an observation on how burials are used in American fiction than a basis for racism.

That doesn't read like him assuming America has no pre-European history, it reads like him assuming America has no pre-European European-style cemetaries. Which is largely correct, because that mode of burial isn't remotely universal.
