You do that, anon.

But the reason why I came back here recently is that the posts has shrunken down to a more manageable size. I just don't have the time to read through fifty secrets and two thousand comments every day. I like it like this.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I never participated at all before. I always missed submission periods because they'd be for two hours once a month or something (not that I'm faulting the mods, when there were so many secrets it was completely understandable), and if I did submit I had trouble finding my own secrets and the corresponding comments sometimes. I like it like this too, although I'd be sad if it shrunk any more.

Yeah this.

Could you please also make some like the "Fart James Joyce would be proud of" secret from a little while ago? That was beautiful.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Bless your light, Anon. I will be forever proud of that one. And glad my shame brought you happiness.

But how is trolling going to ignite discussion? Sure, you'll probably get your flurry of outrage. But unless you have people genuinely arguing different sides of an issue you're not going to sustain debate. You'll just get everyone accusing everyone else of trolling, and the people with the interesting arguments to make will all give up as soon as they realise they're fencing with shadows.

And now that we know someone's wankbaiting, it's very possible that even secrets with enough supporters on both sides to fuel legitimate flame wars are going to get less reaction for a while because people will suspect them of being from this OP.

This point of view is completely, completely mystifying to me. It makes no sense whatsoever.

But I also don't really think F!S is dying so maybe that's part of it. But seriously, this whole thing of really liking wank, or of viewing discussion as a good in itself so much that you don't care if the discussion is pointless anger-inducing toxic wank, or any of it, it is just completely incomprehensible to me.

I mean, I get trolling in itself, but I don't get the point of view that seems to be saying that trolling is somehow good for a community.

yeah, I don't get it either. Isn't that what comms like fandomwank are for?

I prefer discussions where we don't have to freeze half the comments, but whatever floats your boat OP.

I like F!S like it is now, but once in a while it is good to find something on here too to be angry about, I guess?

Lol. Yeah, you know what? I left F!S for a good long while in 2010-2011 because I couldn't stand the nastiness and wank until it quieted down a few months before it moved to DW and became nice and cozy and small -- where I know all the people and there are only a few amusing trollanons per post, and each wankstorm comes only once every few days can be given proper attention and lol'd at satisfactorily.

There was no "love" whatsoever in old!FS -- it was a foul cesspool of viciousness and ugliness and flaming full of haphazard rushed one-line comments with little to no good discussion. Now it's an awesome, lively, fun community with lots of time for good, in-depth discussion of various topics and opinions and ideas because we don't have to spread our time over 40+ secrets.

Also, F!S is not dying at the moment, though I can maybe see why you may think it is if you've been gone a long time. What it did do was quiet down several levels, and it did so a loooong time ago. It's been holding steady at around 900-1300 comments per daily post for two straight years.

Agreed so hard. As infuriating and vile as our trolls can be now, for the most part they aren't nearly as horrible as the ones back in the early days were.

Yeah, I'm really not seeing how wank and anger and mistrust and bad feelings contribute to the long-term health of the comm.

I don't like wank secrets/comments, but I like silly troll secrets that make me laugh. Those are the best.

Where is the love, people?

Perhaps it's gone because idiot trolls want to start wank with every batch of secrets. Just a thought. :B

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of think the drama is partly why there's fewer participants these days. The trolls are getting old, even for trolls, and the way some people act if you like something they don't... I like debate. I don't like people being nasty for shits and giggles.

I like the cut of your jib, OP. Troll away!

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-08-18 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is black text over a blank gray background.]

I'm tempted to make one fake secret per batch that really gets underneath people's skin and causes a flood of comments. Mission accomplished once already, now I'm trying to work out my next plan of attack without seeming too obvious a troll.

My reasons for dong this? No one cares but Fandom Secrets used to be so much fun with the discussions and the drama and the delicious, delicious wank. Now it's dwindling into oblivion with every new round, and where is the love, people? Let's shake things up a bit. I want outraged anons linking to secrets going 'How Dare You!!!111', I want lurkers coming in to join for the wank and stay for the real fun and discussions. I want new people discovering fandoms and seeing secrets they can relate to and going 'oh wow gee I thought I was the only person who felt like that'.

Those sorts of secrets though never seem to get the level of responses that the trolls do, so I figure if I want to light a fire I need to strike a match. And it's not like I even want to go back to LiveJournal, I just want things to work better on DreamWidth. Fandom Secrets is like an institution. It cannot be allowed to die.

huh

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That's funny because all the wank and anger and drama is what drove me away from here. I've just started to come back and am really enjoying the size and content that F!S has these days.

*sarcastic slow clap*

Have fun. You know what I think of you.

I C U, whiny-why-did-you-shut-down-the-wank-threads-Case-whyyyyyyy anon. I get that you're trying to V For Vendetta the comm for the greater good, yadayadayada. What I don't get is why you don't see how arrogant egocentric your plan to make the comm an actively hostile place is. Plus, wank doesn't necessarily attract people who are likely to make the comm a nice place - your plan is basically the equivalent of "We want to attract more people to our book club, so why don't we give away free beer and hire strippers to encourage people to come?"

How about making secrets about things that are currently happening in fandom? Because I can think a couple of things I could just rant my heart out about.
