[Picture is the actress Elisabeth Sladen. She is a (in appearance) middle-aged woman with light olive skin, straight dark brown hair reaching a little past her shoulders and some bangs/forelocks. She is wearing a white shirt, a khaki vest or sweater with an orange trim and a brown leather? jacket over that. She appears to be wearing dark pants and a dark purse too.]

Elisabeth Sladen was born a couple of years before my mother, but was ageing a lot better. When I told my mom that the actress who played Sarah Jane had died (Mom always liked the character), she asked how old she had been. I couldn't bring myself to say "Actually, she was a little older than you" because I didn't want my mom to start comparing herself unfavorably. I lied and said "I think she was in her fifties?"-- i.e. closer to the age Sarah Jane seemed to be on New Who/Sarah Jane Adventures than Sladen's actual age.

Sorry Mom. I think you look good even if you don't always agree.

That's actually very sweet of you. :) Even if it's a pretty minor thing, I'm sure it made her happy.

+1

you are a thoughtful child, op

You're mom is not a fragile idiot, I'm sure she could have handled hearing her age.

Unless I guess your mom is a delicate flower of dramatics and could not in fact handle that tidbit of information? I guess you'd know your mother best.

Ouch. What did OP's mom ever do to you?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Of all the things to be unreasonably angry about.

yeah, everyone everywhere is 100% cool with the idea of their own mortality

especially those who reach an age where they see their peers dying

yup, op's mom is a crybaby, that's obviously that

I love Liz Sladen, but she had good deal of plastic surgery, which is why she looks younger than her age. Actresses tend to need to look younger to get jobs.

OP if you look at this pic of Lis Sladen you can see how much work she'd had done. I adored her and was so upset when she died, but really you can't compare a woman who has aged naturally and someone who has had a lot of surgery.

I think to be honest women who have so much surgery do look older, the surgery itself makes them look unnatural, and often a natural face looks younger by virtue of the fact that it doesn't look like they're trying to hide themselves. I bet your Mum looks fine.
