As someone who's been the recipient of a gift fic, you guys are absolute assholes for getting pissed about it. An online friend of mine wrote a fic for me because my mom died. I was so apathetic about everything, reading fic was the last thing I wanted to do right then so I didn't read it until I was ready.

Sometimes, somebody doesn't respond because they have things going on in their lives that are more important than fandom (and your fic).

That is definitely true in some cases, which is probably why the OP gives people such a long period of time to respond.

But some of the anecdotes people have provided in the comments don't sound like that at all. If someone continues to make a lot of fandom-related posts and to squee about other fics, then I think it's a safe bet to say that that person is blowing off the person from whom they've received a gift. And that's very rude.

I would also point out that your situation is a bit different, in that your friend wrote the piece in question in order to cheer you up during a difficult time. The expectations that she would have as regards your response would be very different from the expectations of someone who filled a prompt.

Thank you. I'm glad someone mentioned this. RL happens to all.

That's quite true, and perfectly plausible, but it's much more likely that it's actually a case of something mentioned by the above comments, and the OP does give them a year. That's a long time in most terms.

And? They still gave you a gift, and it's not like they're throwing a huge Tumblr fit over it. If you haven't so much as said "thanks" in the year after receiving a customized gift, it seems a small penalty to have your name removed from the fic. Like, does it even affect you at all? Do you even notice?

I wanted to say sorry to the OP. I was thinking about my mom all day today and I lashed out at you. I'm really sorry. I really don't think you're a jerk at all for your secret.

No worries, I didn't even notice.

(Everyone had shitty days.)

Also, I think there's a difference between "A friend made a present because my mom died." and "A stranger, for whom I did a pinch-hitter story/art because their match flaked out."

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
But you probably wouldn't, looking back, be pissed because your name was removed from the gift story, would you?
