Re: WHY DO YOU GUYS KEEP DOING THIS?!?!

So from a friend who works in the industry: "Because that's what teenage boys want and that's who is going to shell out the money. It's a business. We're here to make money."

The industry is seriously behind the times and honestly believe shit like that. That's why.

IIRC, most gamers are now in their late 20s/early 30s, and roughly half are women. Why would a developer not want to attract those players? Why would it focus exclusively on a smaller demographic that is largely dependent upon others for its purchasing power?

Because, as I said, they are seriously behind the times. Also, these games do in fact keep making money. I have a lot of friends in the industry and it's really depressing how many companies think this way. I mean it's definitely dependent on the company - some are awesome and know this is all bs, but there are still a lot out there that are full of men who think like this.

It's not really behind the times (purely from a demographic/financial point of view). I mean, there is an audience that likes stuff like that and will spend money on it. It's arguably short-sighted, in the sense that there are other, larger audiences that they might be able to access if their shit wasn't so terrible. But I suspect that, in general terms, there's tons of other developers and publishers who are going after or are going to go after those larger demographics, and it might make sense as a business strategy to stay after the terrible teenage boy nerd demographic for some developers.

So I don't think the rationale that this makes money is necessarily factually incorrect. I mean, they still shouldn't do it, because it's shit. But I think your friend is right in saying this is why it happens.

Oh he's definitely right that it is in fact a forumla that makes money. But he's not right, and the industry is not right, in saying that this is the only way to make money. It might have been back in the day, but games and gamers have changed a lot, which is why I said they're behind the times.

Other people would shell out money if it wasn't so atrocious. Chrissake.
