Uh. Didn't one of those deals bring Sam back to life? From being dead, and quite possibly in Hell? Sucks to be the guy whose brother loved him so much as to sell his soul for him, I guess.

Dean brought Sam back for Dean. Not because he thought Sam was in Hell, why would he? He made the deal for any number of fucked up reasons but none of them had anything to do with saving Sam's soul or whatever. It was a purely selfish act which set them on the road the whole Satan shebang.

Dean's deal was absolutely made for some selfish reasons, but it certainly didn't 'set them on the road to the whole Satan shebang'. The show has been painfully, stupidly clear that they were destined to be the vessels and all that nonsense long before they were born, and that it was inevitable.

And even if you want to ignore the destiny crap, technically it would have been Mary's deal that started them on the road to Satan, not Dean's.

Why wouldn't he? At that point, they had no proof of Heaven but every proof of Hell, and Dean knew Sam's soul wouldn't just stop existing. The best case scenario was that he'd wander the Earth haunting some poor bastard (probably Dean). And how could bringing back your dead brother who died way before his time be "purely selfish"? You make it sound like Sam wanted to be dead before age thirty and mean poopyhead Dean was too cruel to let him.

What part of "Sam was the only person not screwed by that deal" don't you get?

Actually, he was screwed by that deal. That deal was the thing that really, truly set the entire Lucifer shitstorm in motion, because it's what led to the breaking of the first seal. He wasn't the only one screwed by it, certainly, or the worst, but he would arguably have been better off if it had never been made.

But there was absolutely no way to know that at the time. Sam should never have been born in the first place if anyone wanted to prevent those events from being set in motion, and I highly doubt Sam, for all that he's been through since, would have looked favorably on that (considering how he and Dean reacted when Anna tried to do that very thing). Why are people trying to defend Sam's character by implying it would have been awesome if he stayed dead? This conversation is weird.
