Could you just not associate with this person?

Not OP

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
But I think I know who they are talking about, and no it isn't possible unless the OP quits the fandom entirely. Plus the great internet circle jerk is a horrible thing in any fandom, just the sheep tendency in Doctor Who right now is pretty bad. Probably the worst I've seen it in forty years and that is saying something.

Not OP either

Same case in my fandom. I've seen it change for the worst. Years ago it was never this bad.

Um. I'm in the Doctor Who fandom. Both on LJ and discussion boards. Where is this magical, ubiquitous pond-expert, because I have no idea what this secret is about, and I want to find out. Are they on tumblr?

I have no doubt you have a point but I can't take anyone who uses the word "sheep" in this kind of context seriously.

Flame the BNF all you want, but why not toss vitriol at the "sheep" as well?

After all, they're not being paid or tricked into following, are they?

Counter-meta? You'll probably find other ppl who prefer your interpretation to hers.

[Picture is the actress Karen Gillan playing Amy Pond from the TV show "Doctor Who". She is a woman with pale skin and orange-red hair in layers, reaching her chest. She has hazel or gray yes and soft red lips. She is wearing a black undershirt, a red blouse and a dark leather jacket with three-quarter length sleeves. She is leaning to a side with her arms spread a bit for balance.]

Oh my God. You are NOT the authority on Pond! Do you have any idea how pretentious you are?? This is why I hate the Big Name Fan worship, a Big Name Fan gets an idea and suddenly the sheep start accepting it as canon.

The only choice here is to become a kickass popular fanfiction writer yourself and then go nuts with your own headcanon's until they become rival fanons with this BNF's ones, and they battle it out.

Can 6's OP talk to 5's OP about how pretentious they are?

Ugh, these kinds of people are the worst. And while I love Doctor Who, Doctor Who fans are the second-worst of any fandom I've seen (#1 worst are Harry Potter fans, of course). It must have something to do with the way the constant change in Doctor/Companion/Showrunner allows people to glom onto one single permutation as the Only Right Version or something.

Some people just make you gape and shake your head in astonishment at how sincerely, bullheadedly they believe that their interpretations and speculations and headcanons are the gospel truth and anyone who has a different opinion cannot possibly be rejecting that person's interpretation -- no, no, they must simply be "missing" something or have "different values". The possibility that other people actually disagree with their precious ~meta analysis~ is just unfathomable.

People with that attitude send me into a flail of irritation, even when a lot of their ideas are pretty damn great (*cough* tenlittlebullets *cough*) -- it's the fact that people like that just can't wrap their minds around the concept that their great ideas are just ideas and not factual canon that makes them unbearable.

Isn't this how it goes with every fandom?

Some BNF makes a fic or meta with their own twist which becomes fanon which eventually gets taken as canon by many of the fans.

I mean, granted, I've rarely seen BNFs trying to sell themselves as some kind of authority on a character or fanon, but the sheeple effect tends to be in place, either way.

Sounds like a BNF Lannister stan I follow on tumblr. Sometimes I agree with what she says, but other times, her interpretation of these characters seems so completely wrong to me, but everyone just kind of goes with it.
Even if they want to come out and say they disagree, they do it on their own blogs and tag it as something that they know is on the BNF's blacklist, because god forbid they ever disagreed with her publicly.
