Then you'd think it's black. It's all a matter of codes, really. This particular author uses a different code for blond hair, but many others use her code for brown hair to mean blond hair.

In case of doubt, illustrations in colour clear everything up.

Not necessarily. I have dark brown hair, and if I'd have to draw myself (which I'd suck at) I'd probably draw it closer to black anyway, because resemblance-wise that would be much truer. I'd expect medium brown hair to be somewhat grey-ish in a black-and-white comic, and I'd consider hair like in the secret blonde or very light brown.

DA But AYRT is talking about the author in this case chose to not color Tohru's hair even though it's brown. It was her choice/preference and it helps create contrast. The same author, I think, coloured in another manga a character's brown hair with black tips to make it seem darker.

If you live somewhere medium brown is actually a fairly large departure from the norm of dark hair (or at least somewhere where this *used* to be true in the not too distant past) then you might be used to considering "mid-range" brown hair as being fairly light and thus you might be used to seeing it coded in a black and white manga as 'non-coloured' hair.
