Except nigger doesn't have that same ethnic history as gypsy and it certainly doesn't have as many meanings as the gipsy. Nigger has always been a slur for black people and is commonly known as such. Gypsy is used in community names and for scholarships by the community, it is only used as a slur in some places.

Then we have Gipsy being used here and the for multiple things, it's various vehicles, it's an engine, it's a type of ship, it's a first name and a surname, it's a quite a few of locations, it's a logging occupation, it's a couple of software programs, an animal, a yacht...

What I'm getting at, is it is an ethnic slur when used as such, but it's also a whole bunch of other things - especially when it's not in any way used to refer to the Romany people it's meant to be insulting. Because it's not. Sure, some people were surprised and (some tumblr people were offended but I only saw two romani in there, one okay with it one against it) and the writers apologised for the unintentional insult - but I still do not see how that means the world is, in itself, a "slur" at all times.

A lot of the non-Romani things that are called Gypsy or have Gypsy in the title were named that way in reference to Romani, so saying that those things are divorced from the ethic meaning of the word is disingenuous.
