To be fair, though, the same could be said of actual drugs and alcohol

Plenty of people use them socially and without consequence, even the really addictive ones. The reason why they are so dangerous, though, is because of how spectacularly they can screw up someone's life when they're used to fill "an already-existing hole".

(I'm not disagreeing with you on this point, though - this was definitely the situation for me, using fandom to escape some real life crap that nearly doomed me and that I'm still feeling the effects of years after I got out of the worst of it. Almost every addiction has its roots in some other problem in your life, and is rarely a singular problem on its own.)
