The only downside to being obsessed is that sometimes people project what they wish would happen (it's already their "near-perfect" book/show/film trilogy) and don't take into consideration that maybe the author had other plans, then get upset when it becomes obvious that he or she did.

I've had friends just get derisive without the anger, or if not derisive awkward when you mention your old fandom, which makes me think they're either embarrassed, or they're just the sort of people who get really excited about things and then quickly lose all interest - projects, hobbies, jobs, etc. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's hard to befriend people like that through hobbies (or work or wherever) because once they're done, they're done.
