The name Gypsy is an abbreviation of the French word for Egyptian, though the Gypsies originally entered Europe from India in the 14th Century."
The part about them being crop destroyers comes, as you will see in the link, from the latin name. The stigma of gypsies being thieves is much more recent than the discovery and common naming of this moth.
