Why have I not heard of this? I love period dramas. Thanks, OP.

The White Queen is also airing on BBC1 (or has just aired), about the War of the Roses. Airing on Starz in the US.

I read a review of that one and decided to skip it. But the only complaints about Reign that are popping up are that the show is populated by handsome men. Woe is me, I will have to suffer through it.

Poor you. We're all here to support you. *pats*

Thank you, thank you. /sniff. Your support means so much. It will help me get through this awkward and sexy time with television.

Yeah my Uncle tried to watch White Queen and was reduced to a frothing rage 'cause of the liberties taken so I decided to skip it too.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I seriously misinterpreted this comment at first glance...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Every time I get my period, there's drama.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Given that it's the CW and that Catherine de Medicis is almost always portrayed as a witch/evil mother/poison enthusiast, yeah, it's almost certain.

Not OP

Idk, I have some hope since what's been shown in the previews is that she's told that Mary will be the the death of her son. So, I suspect [hope], a lot of her actions will stem from that.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I have not heard of this! Now I am way excited too, OP!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand what you mean by "do justice to".

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
History has not always been kind to Catherine, since she played an important part in all the conflict going on at the time in France (ie: had much influence with her son Henry III and his decisions, make your own judgements).

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Especially on Charles IX, under whose reign the Saint Bartholomew massacre happened.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of the time she's portrayed as evil, a witch, or a poisoner - particularly and, if it's about her husband and his mistresses, an overly jealous and unreasonably vindictive.

Temper your expectations. It's the CW.

Some of the guys in those pics on IMDB have such modern-looking hairstyles to me that I can't help but laugh. But since I'm a sucker for period pieces I might still check it out.

Hey, I enjoyed the Valois Romances. But then, I was in it for the swashbuckling and the honourable, tragic idiots and the sneaky jester. Historical accuracy may not have been Dumas' strong point, but he told a rip-roaring good yarn.

So long as you keep the fiction separate from the history in your head, a lot of period/historical dramas are a lot of fun.

[Picture is a screen-capture of the upcoming TV show "Reign", about the early years of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1557 France. It shows some noble-class persons standing somewhere outdoors and looking like they are waiting for something.]

I really look towards this show, mostly because I hope it will do justice to Catherine de Medicis.

It's a CW show and she already has a bad reputation.

French History is going to be ravished like never seen since Alexandre Dumas.

I'm a day late, and I have no idea what this show is, but that Dumas remark just made my day that much better. Thank you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too! I know Dumas wasn't a stickler for details like, you know, the correct *decades* or dates of Kings' reigns and whatnot, but he was a damn fine storyteller and has always been one of my favorite writers. The Three Musketeers is so beautifully paced that even if you've read it a thousand times, it feels like the first. That is all too rare in a book.
