Experience with/Information about SSRIs (especially Prozac)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-21 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hi guys,

I went to a psychiatrist yesterday to get antidepressants in addition to my therapy since I've been getting worse instead of better.

But since being a nursing student has gotten me a bit paranoid regarding medication that I haven't tried previously and I really don't trust most doctor's anymore I'm now unsure about taking them (stupid, eh?)

Anyway I'd really love if you could share any experiences or useful links/bits of informations with me. I'm doing research of my own as well but there is way too much bullshit out there about psychotropic drugs to find any really useful sites.

Everyone reacts differently to medications. I had a horrible time on Prozac. Others will tell you it saved their life. Don't listen to what people say about their experiences. You're a nursing student. Read your textbooks. Consult professors. Listen to what your doctor has to say. Make your own decision.

This. Everyone reacts differently.

I have Solexa or something, and I very rarely use it because it makes my anxiety worse. To be honest, I never took it often enough to get my body used to it.

Might be. Sounds righter.

Had a bad experience on one, a better experience on another. Still crazy, just not as crazy.

Like mentioned above, everyone will have a different reaction, but my personal experience is thus: I tried Prozac (10mg) as my first dive into antidepressants, and it gave me nightmares and even more anxiety than I started out with, but I wasn't on it long enough to deal with withdrawal. I moved on to Lexapro (20mg) because it feels much milder, have vivid dreams but no nightmares, and the withdrawal (the few times I forget to take it) isn't awful, just extremely short patience, and this weird jangly feeling in my head that ruins concentration...like dizziness but not quite.

SA

Hit post too soon. I didn't know the jangly thing wasn't just me until I saw a few other posts about it on various forums. And yes, the Lexapro made my depression and anxiety better, enough that I plan to stick with it at this dosage. And sex drive is tamped down a bit, but mostly normal.

Citalopram

I was on citalopram rather than prozac. It took the edge off the depression, but it killed my sex drive. :/

I was on Prozac for awhile to help with depression and anxiety. It actually worked quite well for awhile. It wasn't a huge personality shift or anything, I just noticed that I could think more clearly and wasn't bogged down by the fog of depression and the looping thoughts of anxiety. However, I developed an allergic reaction (weird rash all over my body, starting with my torso and it just spread) so I stopped taking it.

I don't know what kind of info you're looking for, but that's my experience with Prozac.
