The concept of fandoms have been around for a long time, darling. Philip was quite attractive in his youth, going all the way up to the 60s. And really, that's all you need for a fandom: a one-time hot dude.

When he was younger he was hot enough to be worshiped as a god. No, I'm not joking either.

And to be fair to him, he did see active service in the Royal Navy in WW2. Not in the modern sense either, he really was posted on dangerous missions through U-boat infested seas. He was on Convoy Escort Duties, known these days as the Redshirt Express.
