I agree that usually that kind of relationship is unequal, but some people wants that. Some young women can feel safer with an older man, like there's someone taking care of her, because some people just like let someone take control. Or there are people attracted to power and success. And these relationships work as well (or as bad) as any other relationship.

Some people want that and some people are just unaware of how imbalanced it is because they're young an inexperienced and don't know better. Again, it depends.

I think there is a world of difference between an 18-year old with a 30-year old, compared to a 28-year old and a 40-year old, even though it's the same age gap.

I think that why Audrey/Dale rubs some people the wrong way is because she's basically a high school girl, and culturally that puts her still more in the realm of a child than that of an adult. I think that, had she been just two yours older, but was working an adult job people would have felt much differently.

Personally it never bothered me so much because Twin Peaks felt more like a sort of Alternate Universe to me, and because how those characters acted, but I think in some settings the same age gap would bother me.
