Maggie Smith's character from Downton Abbey.

She's hilarious, because Maggie Smith is a solid gold comic actress HBIC. And 90% of the press about Downton Abbey in the MSM is about how flawless her character's withering one-liners are.

But because she's old and funny, she's also a perfect vector for Fellowes' classist, imperial, racist, apologist ideology. She's a badass old lady who's exempt from change. You laugh with her. You know she's wrong, but she's so damn quotable and you want to be on her team. Except on reflection her team is awful.

Until I read this comment I thought 'Dowager Countess of Grantham' must be a sarcastic nickname for Margaret Thatcher, and I'm still not sure I was wrong. 'Grantham' is kinda a loaded word.

Yes but that's also the point about Prince Philip, and why people do cut him some slack for it.
