Entitled tumblr followers are so mysterious to me. What goes through their little tumblr minds.

guilty conscience

Where does the secret say anything about Tumblr?

Re: guilty conscience

I guess "fandom blog" and "followers" led me to assume it was about tumblr. Do other platforms use those terms to?

I don't have a guilty conscience, though. Just mystified at the kind of abuse popular tumblr blogs get.

tumblrweeds?

But honestly I'm not sure this is a tumblr blog if serious money's getting put into the content on it. I use tumblr myself and it just doesn't seem a great medium for that (stuff gets knocked down on dashes quickly and such).

As long as you enjoy it, keep it up; no one HAS to follow you. (Do people actually bug you to blog more? IDK if they do or how often, but I say either ignore them or have a response to copy+paste or link them to.)

[Picture is a beach. It shows part of the blue sky with white clouds and a very foamy sea wave with sad tinted blue-gray, probably because water/light/particles/etc. physics]

I find as I get older I have less time for fandom. No real problem, it happens. Cool, yay, a promotion and over time but I like my job it's fun(-ish).

What is frustrating is running a fandom orientated blog. It seems my followers care more than I do about how active I am. It's frustrating. I have a life! I'm not online all the time! Good for them that they're online posting all the time for whatever reasons, you have your fun, but you can't get snarky at me about not being online because I'm working or out with friends or even doing chores!

Bonus secret: The money from my job pays for a lot of the things they get to enjoy on my blog. No job = no blog!

Unrelated picture. It's a wave waving at you. *waves*

I appreciate your wave puns.

Well, at least they missed you! I've taken a hiatus from my once-daily fandom blog with heaps of followers and lots of original content that took a lot of time to put together, due to getting suddenly busy, and no one's messaged me to say "hey what's the deal". But I understand, it takes a lot of time to make good content, and people don't always realise that, or that other people have less time than they do.

I did that too, and nobody messaged me. It's only when I made an announcement that there would be a hiatus that I got some answers. *shrug*
Maybe they didn't want to sound like they were hassling you to update update update NAOW?

*solidarity fistbump* I have no sympathy for certain people in fandom

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-08-23 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I never understood why people in fandom get so pissed off when they hear someone else is just busy in their offline life and thus unable to participate or be active in fandom more. I used to assume it was just young fans who still didn't quite grasp the obligations older fans would have to deal with, except I've heard this sort of thing from older fans who should have an idea of how the grown-up world works, and often younger fans seemed to show some maturity about this, so now I'm not so sure it's just an age thing.

Probably the worst was when I got a PM back when I was in high school from a fan upset about how long it's been since I updated what they called their favorite fic. I apologized and said that between school finals, college paperwork, and working two jobs, I just had a lot less time for fandom.

Apparently, I needed to get my priorities straightened out, because fandom and fanfic are clearly more important than trying not to jeopardize my grades or my jobs, especially right before college. *eyeroll* That kind of put me off updating that particular fic ever again (on top of just sheer frustration with the fic itself). Even worse was not too long after, a different person once asked me why I bothered to work at all, let alone work two jobs, if I still lived with my parents who could just pay for everything for me. -_-

To this day, if I ever hear someone complaining about their parents or whoever putting restrictions on the amount of time they can spend on Tumblr the Internet because of their bad grades, I have less than zero sympathy for their "plight". Grow the fuck up and get over yourselves, fandom is NOT more important than being a functional adult or your education and future. And for all the others, if you want to be an overgrown child with no future or prospects, that's fine, but don't you dare get pissed off at the rest of us for trying to be functional adults/human beings.

.../rant (That got away from me a bit. Can you tell I've been frustrated by this bullshit, lately?)

I'm really sorry to hear about this, OP. While it sucks for everyone that you may not get to spend as much time as you and everyone else might want in fandom, I'm glad to hear you have a good job and good pay going for you. Please don't let annoying fans put you off doing something you love, and don't take any shit you don't have to. :)

*slow claps*

Holy shit, this is exactly how I feel. People being overgrown children and just not bothering to grow up is such a plague across the internet and fandom in general. It drives me up the wall.

The thing about this trend that really bothers me is how everyone else seems to encourage this. A few weeks ago, someone who I used to follow blogged to say her "oppressive tyrants of parents" were cutting down her Internet access - not even cutting it off, mind you, just cutting it down - because she got bad grades. And people agreed with her.

What. The. Fuck. (Guess why I no longer follow her?)

There's a difference between supporting someone through a failure and enabling that failure. And I don't care what self-esteem crap someone spews at me, spending so much time in fandom as to cause damage to your grades is a failure.

Yeah, this, exactly.
I bet those are people who, when their parents die, will suddenly have to find a way to sustain themselves, and will blame the whole world for having to pay for food etc.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-08-23 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
That always confuses me, too. Like, being able to sustain yourself isn't just about independence and maturity (though those are important, too). It's the fact that your parents aren't immortal. They're going to die and you're going to have to take care of yourself, one day - how do you expect to do that? -_-

You have every right to get frustrated over this. You can even tell it to their face.
No job = no fandom goodies.
