I was delightfully surprised that they chose a non-Japanese Asian culture for once as a setting, and not just for the sake of being exotic -- it just flows so naturally, how they introduce the reader to it

honestly, I really like the characters and their interactions and how their different cultural experiences influence those interactions, but I need more plot-hooks than just "this demon fox spirit took on the form of this girl's sister after murdering her and other people, is now fooling everyone, and now wants to kill the last loose thread" to really really get engaged, especially when combined with the relatively sedate pacing (which is not a deal-breaker by itself, but, yeah...)
