Weird question

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
What exactly is a fandom?

I mean, for me it used to mean people who all loved something obsessively in a geeky fashion, but now it seems to mean you participate in fanfic, even if you hate the medium, or you just love something but don't necessarily write fic or do fanart, i.e. bandom - which I've never seen as a fandom (no offense, it's my quirk) because unless there's RPF... isn't anyone who really likes a band technically in fandom?

I'm NOT trying to make anyone's fandom seem less so. Just curious as to whta the real definition is, and whether or not it's technically changed? I mean, I did get into fandom thirteen years ago, so I'm sure like all of the internet it's changed a little.

A fandom is a community.

I think being in fandom means you participate in some sort of activity beyond passively consuming the canon. That activity can be reading or writing fic, creating fanart, having discussions or creating meta, cosplaying, attending conventions or concerts, buying merch, or whatever, as long as it's more than just watching the show/playing the game/listening to the music/etc. There are media I enjoy that I am not in the "fandom" for, because I don't do anything beyond enjoying the media, even if I enjoy that media a lot.

This, pretty much.

That's how I see it.

Also why people always say, "Such and such doesn't have a fandom..." Technically, almost every show/creative work has a couple fans, but fandom really describes fan activity, too.

I think a fandom is when a group of people creates or consumes non-canon creations. So, a fandom is anything with at least two people, and at least one fic/mix/vid/piece of fanart.

The community of fans.
Also, the state of being a fan of something.
