Writing question

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone else made the mistake of telling people their ideas, having said people shoot them down, and then not being able to write it? Even if you just give an inkling?

That's why I don't tell people my ideas now. Because I'm so sick of being told what's wrong with them before my plot bunnies have even tasted carrots.

Yes. I actually had someone shoot me down hard enough that I stopped writing for years...and I'm only just now toying with the idea of getting back into it. [In fairness, this was someone I was very very close to saying something pretty damn harsh, to say the least.]

I mean, I don't mind discussing ideas, or exploring possible plot holes/how to solve them but...yeah. I get what you mean all too well, Nonny.

I've told people my ideas, had them shot down, and then had said people use my ideas. Grrr.

I've had people do precisely this to me before too and it turned me off of sharing my ideas with anyone for years.

Only person I've ever shared ideas/plot bunnies with is my best friend and she does the same with me. I'm sorry that happened to you.

AYRT

What sucked was at the time, the person was my best friend. Or so I thought. Looking back she never was as good a listener as I thought.

Oh, that's extra harsh. Sounds like she wasn't a good friend at all.

That's awful. I only share my ideas with people if I think they're really cool (both ideas and people) and fully expect to receive nothing but "oh, cool" in return. I don't frame it as looking for suggestions, just saying what I plan or want to do. So far it's worked. I'm sorry yours went differently, and by a good friend too :(

That's a shame. I feel like ANY idea can be done well, pretty much - it's just purely a matter of the quality of the writing. I mean, there are so many wacky fic premises out there that have been carried off really well.

Awww, That really sucks OP. I don't really try to explain my ideas even to close friends very often, because I suck at getting things across. That's why I prefer writing in the first place.
