You're not wrong. For all the cartoons I watched growing up in the 80's and 90's, it wasn't until I discovered anime that I ever had specific characters I loved (the exception being game-based cartoon characters like Yoshi and Sonic, where my interest transferred from the games to their cartoons and was independent of their VAs' work since games didn't have voice acting back then). Prior to that I had enjoyed shows purely for their scenarios and jokes, and the only live-action shows I watched were Nickelodeon game shows. Nowadays with most animation done overseas in Korea, VA facial animation is pretty strictly limited to CGI movies, and again I have trouble getting attached to characters in such films (the sole exception being Gru from Despicable Me, though there is a scene in the sequel that makes me wince every time because the expression he makes is so unmistakably Carell).

It's much easier for me to love anime characters and have favorites because they are almost always designed without their potential VAs in mind. And even when they are, English dubs take even that link away. My first love was James of Team Rocket, and I challenge anyone to prove there's more of Eric Stuart in him than just his voice.
