Ah, I loved this show as a kid! I haven't watched it since though, so idk if it holds up, but nostalgia can be a powerful thing.

My childhood was good so I sort of feel you. There are things I miss and things I don't.

I was about her age when this came out, maybe a little bit older. While I didn't have your experience of looking "up" to her, I did feel jealous of her and wanted to be her. Mostly for the powers... I wanted cool powers. :D

I don't remember the series that well but yeah I wanted those powers (or any powers TBH).

same here. I loved when she turned into transparent goop to slide under doors and stuff!

[Picture is the cover/a promotional image of the Nickelodeon TV show "The Secret World of Alex Mack". It features Alex Mack, as played by Larisa Oleynik. She is a teenager with light olive skin and kind of long dark blonde hair, reaching past her shoulders, wearing a backwards black baseball cap, a white T-shirt and a sleeveless grayish purple shirt over that. She is leaning on her side, supporting her weight on an elbow and resting her cheek on that arm's fist. She is smiling at the viewer.]

I used to be obsessed with The Secret World of Alex Mack when I was a young girl. I used to be so jealous of Alex and her awesome life and how adult she was, being a big high schooler.

I recently bought the DVDs and as I was watching them I became really emotional. Because I realized that I'm no longer that little girl who looks up to "big adult" Alex Mack. I'm in my twenties now and I miss being this young more than anything in the world.

I liked that show enough (mostly read the books based on them though), but... I never bought that Alex's older sister wouldn't have told their parents that, you know, they were working for an evil company that technically (if not specifically until the season finale when Alex was discovered) wanted their child dead.

You're in your twenties and you're freaking out about getting old?

Oh, you poor dear. I'm not being sarcastic. That's awful. Because it gets so much worse.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I freaked out about being old the day I graduated high school.

It's ten years later, and I'm still freaking out, and I consistently freaked out through all those years.

It's a problem.

Hmm. Never seen this show. But if I have similar nostalgic feelings, it's not so much because of the age itself, but because my high school experience as a whole was so much better than college...

She should have just stuck with the Very Secret Diaries.

Aw, man, I remember how much I was into this show and the tie-in books. How you feel about it is how I felt about The Babysitter's Club. I was totally in awe of these grown-up thirteen-year-olds having all these awesome adventures. Looking back on it now in my twenties is surreal.

Yeah, I remember wanting powers like hers. Although preferably not having the evil company who accidentally gave me them chasing me...

Dude, you're in your twenties

I'm in my twenties

Do you have any idea how young we are?

How dismal is the rest of your life going to be if you miss being stuck in high school more than anything?

YOU CAN DRINK NOW! YOU DON'T HAVE A CURFEW! YOU'RE AN ADULT DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW COOL THAT IS

Re: Dude, you're in your twenties

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
It must suck to live in a country were the legal drinking age isn't 16.

or even 18

"hey you you can live alone and drive and marry and be drafted in times of war and smoke but

NO ALCOHOL FOR YOU OH MY GOSH think of the children"

and then it stops like only a handful of teens while the other ones are all like "sheesh grow some ninja skills"

wasn't alex mac only 12 or 13? i can definitely see why op misses those times. no responsibilities, no worries, your parents do everything for you, etc.

sometimes being an adult sucks :(

Oh man, I caught a rerun of the pilot on TV a while back and was absolutely shocked by how young she was. After all those years of thinking of her as one of the grown-up big kids, it was so weird to look at it through an adult's eyes and realize she was just a baby.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my fucking Alex Mack. I wanted to be her so much when I was younger. And I didn't have cable or TV so I could only watch it when at cousin's or friends house and they all thought it was so dull, yet I'd make them watch it because I thought Alex Mack was the coolest kid around.

Am I the only one that thinks this secret is the cutest?? It's so adorable, because I know these feels.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
Used to love this show, watched it with my younger sister!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
OP, I know it doesn't feel like it, but being in your twenties is young. If you freak out about it now, you're going to feel quite silly when you hit your 30s, 40s and beyond about how decrepit you thought you were.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Fun story. My dad used to let me and my brother hold mercury on a spoon and say to us; "Look, it's Alex Mack."

Thank god Social Services never found out.
