Yeah, when I was a kid and had no concept of shipping, my brain definitely put them together as a couple.

They both have like skin and short dark blond or light brown hair. They are both wearing rural, kind of old-fashioned clothes consisting of a denim overall and a long-sleeved white shirt. I shipped them since I was ten years old, before the concept of shipping even occurred to me. To this day, I still associate these two with my initial feeling of recognition when I first encountered people talking about shipping on the internet.

I was personally more baffled by Tom already having two girlfriends he liked so intensely. Is this a normal thing for children that age?

sure, it can be. I had a "boyfriend" in in kindergarten until we "broke up" after a few months. We didn't actually kiss or anything (I don't think the thought really occurred to us) but we talked about getting married and he promised to buy me a purple rocketship we could fly together, haha. I had a different boyfriend in first grade and we were together the whole year. We mostly just played videogames together but at the time we thought we were quite in love and romantic.

I can't remember how old Tom was at that point though

thanks! I was a very late bloomer and kept to myself growing up, so what is considered normal in these circumstances for children/young teens sort of eludes me

No problem. I'm not sure if the majority of children were like this because I certainly knew many who weren't. I think I may have been one of the few people in my first grade class to be "dating" actually. So I'm not sure it was normal, but I also don't think it's out of the norm if that makes sense

Aww! That's so cute! And it brought back memories!

I had a "boyfriend" in pre-school (PRE-SCHOOL. ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS), and we would hug, and our parents thought it was so cute. The one memory I have is of us jumping around pretending to hiccup like cartoon characters. Otherwise, I just know that he was dirty blond.

The first grade "boyfriend" I remember a lot better. My friends would tell me that he was "using" me and I would say, "no, I'm using him" (none of us knew what that meant, of course; we were just throwing around words we'd heard from adults). One day, we got "married" on the baseball diamond at recess, and we performed the ceremony twice because everyone wanted to see us kiss (which we DID! Just pecks, of course. But I remember him looking so smug about it. He stuck his nose in the air and his hands in his pockets and positively strutted). Our "honeymoon" involved going to the playground and playing tag. At the end of the year, we got assigned to different second grade classes, and he looked at me and said, "good-bye, [name]." At the time, it felt super dramatic and important.

I remember a few kids in my when I was in elementary school "going out" and having "boyfriends and girlfriends." They usually only lasted a day or a few weeks and involved holding hands and sharing during snack time. Somebody in fourth grade proposed to a girl, but was also going out with a friend of mine at the same time and she started crying during recess. So I think there's a few mini-Casanova's in every class.
