costumes of characters of different races

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
so the 2-year-old boy I nanny for told me he wants to wear a Diego costume for Halloween. (If you don't know, Diego is a character on Dora the explorer.) This little boy, despite coming from a mostly dark-complected Egyptian family, ended up with his features looking like a Greek grandparent and is blond, blue-eyed, and fair skinned. Of course I loved his idea for the Diego costume, but then I started thinking about how tumblr and ONTD would react to a white kid wearing the costume of a non-white character.

So, what do you think? Should it be okay for little white kids to wear costumes of non-white characters? When should we draw the line, since it seems like teenagers certainly aren't allowed to do so without drawing ire?

Dressing as a character is an expression of one's admiration for them, so outlawing whites dressing as non-white characters is ridiculous. It's like saying, "Nope, it's not okay for you to idolize or emulate this person. They're different from you and out of bounds." Let alone the fact that this is a kid we're talking about.

People on Tumblr are crazy if they'd have a problem with a kid dressing as their favorite character. Actually, they'd be real assholes if they had a problem with it.

Those people on Tumblr are assholes. It's just a little kid who should be allowed to dress as his favorite character.

If you dress as a specific character, it's okay and not cultural appropriation. If you dress as something like Generic Mexican Person ('Cause, See? I've Got a Sombrero!) or whatever, that's bad.

Also a bad idea if you're, say, putting on dark makeup to do so. There's quite a bit of controversy as to whether that's acceptable, and I can sort of see the arguments for either side, having sat in on a cosplay panel where the subject sort of took over the entire discussion and I heard people (white and not white alike) defending it AND condemning it. I came out of there thinking that clearly it offends enough people that even if I had thought it was acceptable, I wouldn't do it. But little kids don't tend to do that kind of thing anyway, so... yeah. Not seeing that problem popping up here.

Ayrt

I guess I thought that went without saying, but yeah, best to avoid changing your skin color, not even for a specific character (unless it's a blue alien or something).

I'd try and steer him away from it tbh. It's not like there's a shortage of white people for him to go as, and it leaves a bad taste in peoples mouth seeing white people dressing as POC's

It leaves a bad taste in the mouths of dumbasses like yourself, possibly.

You are an awful, awful person.

"No, junior, you should only stick to your own race."

I think there's a Klan rally missing you.

Why not? Even if he was a teen/older, I don't really see why - as long as they are respectful - a person [any person] can't dress as a character they idolize.

As long as you don't darken his skin

I think a lot of the problems tumblr has with white people dressing up as non-white characters were people who also darkened their skin to be more like the character which would equal blackface
