WtNV Racial Fun

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I have no clue where to talk about this because the general Tumblr hivemind frightens me a little, but I digress. There's racewank abound in the Night Vale fandom because Carlos is described as having dark skin and comparatively few people depict him that way in fanart. This is a damn good reason to have ruffled feathers.

But then I somehow found this blog (http://www.carlosisnotwhite.tumblr.com) and I can't help but feel that it's...just rude as hell to the reblogged artists. I'm older now, and all I can see in most of these works is a younger version of myself drawing a dumb picture for my friends at the lunch table and someone walks by and cuts it down out of the blue. I suppose the public forum aspect of Tumblr plays into this, but jeez, it seems like young kids can't draw a picture of a faceless character from a radio show without getting sideswiped.

Not even sure what I want anyone to say in response to this- my feelings are just confusing me (because POC representation is an issue). Anyone else find this blog a tad off-putting? What do you think?

SA (Oh bummer, misfire on my first attempt to make a topic. You may delete this if you like, Case!)

Reminds me of the Blaise Zabini shenanigans.

there are actually MULTIPLE blogs devoted to doing this in the WTNV fandom; honestly, it grossed me out so much that I not only left the fandom, I stopped listening to the show altogether.

I can understand being upset because a character is drawn too fair, that's fine, but there is a RIGHT way to do it-- maybe send them an ask saying "hey your character is too white"?-- and a wrong way, which is posting their shit like that and encouraging people to go anon and flood the artists with hate mail (which I have heard of happening in more than one case).

Fuck.
That.

I've only ever seen carlos depicted with dark skin in fanart but then again I never actually go into the tags. I just wait for people to reblog fanart

he doesn't even look white in a couple of those examples. "dark skin" means a lot of things, how dark does he have to be for this person?

I don't really dig any blogs that call out individual people for whatever it is everyone is mad about. It just invites anonymous dogpiling on the offender, who might not even realize they've done anything wrong. I'm 8 episodes into WTNV, and I either missed the part where he's described as dark-skinned because I was doing something else in the background or I haven't gotten there yet. If I were an artist and I posted a fanart with an inadvertently inaccurate Carlos, I'd feel pretty crappy if something like this happened to me.

And some of these drawings don't even look white. Look at this one: http://carlosisnotwhite.tumblr.com/image/59029599040
How is that a depiction of him as white?

I sent an anon ask (not risking that kind of hellfire on my blog) to the blog asking about the non-white white Carloses.

I think part of it is that it's really hard to color and shade dark skin without fucking up the outline or making it hard to see the character's features. I ruined a lot of stick men in grade school trying to color over a black outline with the brown marker. I had a lot of white stick men after that.

yeah what you described there-- inadvertently making Carlos' skintone inaccurate and then getting posted there and dogpiled-- happened to me. I've since resolved to stop drawing non-white characters. Not worth the ire I'd inevitably get.
