Re: Misinterpreted secret

Maybe not really misinterpreted, but I once posted a secret about how it annoys me when I'm reading a fic with a sex scene and the disrobing process is very thoroughly described... except it never mentions the characters taking off their shoes. I put a note in the secret about how obviously, this did not apply to situations where characters would not be wearing shoes. Apparently, either people didn't see that or it wasn't enough because the thread just dissolved into SHOE WANK with everyone going on about "OMG, some people take their shoes off when they get home!" or "In some cultures, it is customary to take your shoes off when you first enter a house!" or "You can have sex with your pants still on!" Because, you know, no one ever wrote a fic with a sex scene that took place outside of a home or involving activities that no, you really couldn't do with your pants still on...

As someone who does take off her shoes when she gets home most of the time, I really don't understand why everyone got so up in arms about it.

ha ha i remember that

i think it's because of where you placed the note; people skimming through secrets missed it

this is actually a good litmus test of who reads the secrets throughly actually

...I actually loved that thread. It was so fascinating, and I learned so many things about different shoe norms! I was sitting there going, "SPOUSE! DID YOU KNOW THAT IN NORWAY THEY TAKE OFF THEIR SHOES AT SCHOOL? ISN'T THAT AMAZING?! And I never really thought about how in the US there's a set of social rules around taking our shoes off in other peoples' houses, BUT THERE TOTALLY IS! CRAZINESS!" I guess I'm a little weird.

But, all of that said...I am sorry that people took the wrong meaning from your secret and kind of derailed it. :-/ It would have been better if someone had been inspired to make a "cultural shoe practices" thread in the General Comments or something, and in the actual secret thread, everyone responded to what you were really getting at.
