(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 06:09 am (UTC)(link)Sorry, I didn't meant that "not English" was a genre. Of course it's not. I just meant that I think the situations of someone who doesn't like non-English music and someone who doesn't like, say, heavy metal are comparable.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 06:15 am (UTC)(link)I think it's not so much about being not-English specifically as "not a language I understand." As has been noted many, many times in these comments, some people find lyrics really important. Even if they also like instrumental music-- if there is a voice, they like to know what it's saying. That goes for people who speak English, French, Russian, Georgian, etc. It's not that "not English" is a genre. But it's that "not in a language I speak" is a group of music that you can very easily just not enjoy.
(And this is speaking as someone who listens to plenty of music in a variety of languages, but very strongly prefers music in Russian, English, or Polish-- languages I can understand.)
